Counselor's Corner

Oakwood Students:

Welcome to another school year at Oakwood ISD!  I hope that each and every one of you had a nice and enjoyable summer vacation.  I am very fortunate this year to be taking over as full-time school counselor!  That means I will be more available to you this school year.  I look forward to working with all of you on your preparations for the future.

It is never too early to start thinking about what the future holds for you.  You want to make sure that you graduate under the right program and with the right credits to help you work towards your higher education and career goals.  I will be meeting throughout the year with all high school students about your goals and expectations after graduation.  This will allow me to better help you achieve those goals and will help you to have a better focus on those goals.

I consider it a privilege to be your school counselor because I know we have some of the greatest students at Oakwood High School!  Remember my door is always open if you need me.  I am here to help make sure you are on your way to achieving your goals.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

• Students need to start registering to take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible, especially juniors and seniors.  The next test date is October 25^th for the ACT and the registration deadline is September 19^th.  For SAT, the next test date is October 4^th and the registration deadline is September 9^th. 
• Come by my office to pick up registration packets for ACT and SAT as well as directions for how to register online and for practice study materials.
• Any freshmen, sophomores or juniors that want to take the PSAT need to come by my office and sign-up.  The fee for PSAT testing is $13.  Students are responsible this year for paying the test fee.
• I will be doing a check on credits for all juniors and seniors to make sure that each of you are on track to graduate on time and with all the required credits. 
• A reminder to parents to complete tax preparation as early as possible in 2009 so that FAFSA information can be completed by students in a timely manner.
• Watch the school calendar for Parents Night, where we will meet with all Freshmen-Senior parents to discuss graduation requirements, scholarships, financial aid, etc.
