Second semester is well underway and I just wanted to pass along a few reminders for each high school class.
ü You should already have applied and likely been accepted to at least one, if not multiple, colleges at this time of the school year. If you have not yet applied to the college, university, or technical school that you are interested in attending, please see me ASAP.
ü You and your parents should be working throughout the month of February to complete your FAFSA financial aid information. Remember that OHS will be hosting two FAFSA nights on February 19th and 21st, to assist you and your parents in the FAFSA completion process. These FAFSA workshops will be held in the high school library from 6:00-8:00 p.m. (A parent must be present in order for us to work on the FAFSA at school). You may also complete the FAFSA with your parents at home as well. Feel free to call or come by my office for questions.
ü If you and your parents can’t make either one of our FAFSA nights and you don’t want to do it at home, you and your parents may set up an appointment with me for help in completing the FAFSA. Again, because of the sensitive nature of the FAFSA information, I will not work on the FAFSA with students without at least one parent present.
ü WATCH YOUR SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES. Deadlines will be posted on all of the applications and on the Counselor bulletin board outside my office. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS TURNED IN TO ME OR MAILED TO ORGANIZATIONS ON TIME.
ü Make sure that your grades are where they need to be and that you are not in danger of failing any courses for the semester and/or for the year. See me ASAP if you are concerned about failing a course.
ü Seniors that are taking dual credit courses: PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO YOUR GRADES since many of you are taking required courses as dual credit courses.
ü Make sure that you have no issues with attendance. If you do, you need to make arrangements to make up those days before graduation.
ü Final GPA and class rank for Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Historian will be calculated at the end of the 5th six weeks. That does not mean that 6th six weeks grades do not count. GPA and class rank will be recalculated at the end of the year as well.
ü Register to take the ACT and/or SAT before the end of this school year
o SAT dates – May 4th and June 1st
o ACT dates – April 13th and June 8th
ü Keep track of your credits and grades. Make sure you are not in danger of failing a course(s) for the semester or the school year.
ü Gather information and begin to narrow down your college choices to about five. Be sure to include at least one junior college in your selections.
ü Keep track of all your activities and accomplishments in high school for college and scholarship application purposes. You will need this information next year.
ü Be sure to see me if you are interested in taking dual credit courses or the CNA course next school year.
Sophomores & Freshmen:
ü Keep track of your activities and accomplishments each year. You will need all of this information when you become seniors.
ü Keep a check on your grades, credits, and attendance.
ü Be sure to make sure you are meeting your STAAR assessment requirements each year.
ü Begin to think about colleges and careers that you are interested in after high school.
ü Sophomores need to meet with me by the end of this school year if you are interested in taking dual credit courses for the 2013-2014 school year.
All students, grades PreK-12, I am here to serve you. If you need anything at any time please let your teachers know (PreK-6th) or come by my office (7th-12th) and I will do my best to help you with any situation or circumstance.
Let’s finish this year strong! Go Panthers!!
Please feel free to come by my office with any questions you may have or for more information on academic advising and/or other counseling. J
