Yes, we require that students be fully immunized against certain diseases. If there are medical reasons or reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, that the student will not be immunized, the parent or guardian must present a certificate or statement for an exemption. My child must take medication during school hours. What is the protocol?

If it is necessary for a student to bring medication to school, we must receive it in its original container. Please include a note of instruction, signed by the student’s parent, and deliver it to the district nurse in the office upon arrival to school. Students may not keep medication for self-administration. Please see the Student Handbook, available within the Parent Information and Student Information quick links on our Home page, for exceptions and for additional information.

Does Oakwood ISD have a dress code?

We have established the district’s dress code to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided they comply with the district guidelines. Some of these guidelines include:

  • Shorts: All students may wear shorts no shorter than two inches above the knee. The length of the shorts should fall between two inches above the knee and no longer than one inch below the knee.
  • Sleeveless Garments: Elementary girls in grades pre-K  3 may wear sleeveless garments. Fourth – 12th grade students may not wear sleeveless garments to school or in any classroom other than physical education or athletic classes.
  • Dresses, split skirts, and any other skirts are to be no more than two inches above the knee front, side, and back.
  • Elementary students may wear sweat bottoms at the discretion of the administration.
  • Junior high and high school students may not wear sweat bottoms.
  • T-shirts must have sleeves. Students may not wear muscle shirts, sleeveless shirts, backless blouses, or body suits.
  • We do not permit any clothing or attire which promotes racism, gang participation, affiliation with any radical group, displays or makes reference to lewd or vulgar behavior, alcohol or drugs, tobacco products or that might cause discord among the student body.
  • Shirts and other clothing may not have anything of a violent nature, e.g. pro-wrestling, etc.
  • Students may not wear crop tops, halter-tops, or blouses or tops that reveal skin at the midriff, reveal the cleavage, or are see-through.
  • Students’ shirts and jeans must not have holes in them.
  • Students must not wear sagging, baggy pants or shorts; pants and shorts must properly fit at the waist.
  • Any normal school activity such as sitting, bending, or reaching should not reveal undergarments

This is only a partial list. The principal has the right to make a judgment about what may reasonably be expected to cause a disruption or interference with normal school operations.
